I recently got this fm1100 from my friend as a gift.

I know how to connect it hardware side but how should I setup the software side.

Hello again,

Yes, Your SIM card should be paid to have a plan or must have some money in mobile account to send SMS messages. 

SMS Data sending should be enabled in configurator when device is connected please see the link to find it in the screenshot:

If You wish to send your data to a certain server SIM card should have a plan for internet to be able send GPRS data. Please see the screenshot of GPRS settings

In order to send data to a server you should enter:

APN - ( Access Point Name - every mobile network provider has a different APN, which allows You to connect to the internet)

APN username - ( username used by mobile network )

APN password - ( username used by mobile network )

Domain - Server's IP adress

Port - The port used in the server and opened for listening to incoming data.

APN credentials can be received from your mobile network provider
