I want to use a vehicle tracker such as FMC 125/135 but i only have access to sim cards that only support data. So can these devices be configured/ operated without the use of SMS at all? i have tried to look in the forums and device manuals here but after reading several posts i do not have a conclusive answer.

thank you in advance

Hello.

Devices can be used without SMS, but you would not be able to send any SMS commands to the device and receive them. You can always upload new configurations over FOTA WEB, but SMS messages makes minor configurations more convenient or viewing specific information about device.

Hello and thanks for the prompt reply!

Just to be sure though, i would still be able to get notifications and alerts on the Android application. Of course it will mean that i have to be connected to the data network at all times. Is this correct?

thank a lot!

Hi,

Yes the, device can be used without a SMS capable SIM card. I saw you mentioning about getting alerts/notifications to an Android application. Could you clarify which application are you referring to?

Hello,

i was thinking this one where i see in the screenshots there are notification menus:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=teltonika.com.personaltracker

Ideally i would like to connect the tracker to my boat using the data sim and be able to monitor it either on request or getting push notifications/emails when triggers occur (e.g. geofencing violation etc).

thank you in advance for your time,

Hi,

I haven't personally tried this app, so I can't vouch for it or tell how it works. If you're looking for a solution right now, I could suggest using a traccar server (https://www.traccar.org/) - it's free and open-source. You can configure a SMTP email client there and receive emails whenever your device leaves/enters geofence zones as well as see the track data live via your computer, iOS or/and android phone via their app. Also it is possible sending commands via traccar when the device is connected to the server (the very same ones that are usually sent via SMS), so this might be a good option for you.

Best regards,
